11 juillet 1897.

The 11th of July, 1897. Three men set off from Spiztbergen in a hydrogen balloon towards the North Pole. They will never come back. After only two days of travel, their balloon – called ‘The Eagle’ – plummets towards the ice pack and crashes. Several months of wandering in the Arctic followed, then the construction of an ice hut that the three men named ‘Home’. They disappear into a frozen nightmare few weeks later. 33 years passed. On the 6th of August, 1930, thanks to a particularly warm summer, a seal-hunting ship discovered the remains of the expedition on the island of Kvitøya (the White Island), at the northernmost point of the Svalbard archipelago. This included the bodies perfectly preserved under the snow as well as notebooks and rolls of film. 93 of the 240 photographs found were recovered. What do these photographs tell us ? Why does this expedition continue to fascinate us ? What did these men die of ?
